up with the birds ,
dex pushed his glasses up farther onto the bridge of his nose and adjusted them to a comfortable level. he had just changed out of his contacts and into glasses since they were annoying him today. he was just too tired to wear contacts and be bothered by dry eyes while he wrote. he had his favourite quill in his hand and a pad of parchment paper to write on. dex had a free period in the middle of the day which he spent writing in a tower at hogwarts. barely anyone knew about his favourite spot, barely anyone came up here either. he was glad to be alone with his quill, he had been inspired to write a tragic love story, he wanted it to be thrilling yet dark. he loved the kind of stories that took you on an adventure whenever you read them. dex sat down in the corner of the tower and took a minute to ponder before writing. he knew that emily had a free period during this time too, maybe she'd come and accompany him as he wrote.
emily was a year older than dex, he didn't really care for the age gap. he related better with older people anyways, she had a great personality and they clicked well as friends. she brought out the more softer side of him, the side of dex that enjoyed laughing about silly things. not the uptight student most people thought he was. he brushed those thoughts away and started to write on the parchment. his grandfather had gotten him one of the expensive enchanted quills that never ran out of ink. it had been dex's favourite birthday present of all time. his parents sent him a clown card every year with money in it, he hadn't spoken to them in years and didn't intend on it. few people knew about dex's family issues, he rarely opened up and shared facts about himself. he sighed and kept writing, his quill moving quickly across the paper and filling the page fast.

[atrb=width,400] Emily walked through the long corridors with her book clutched rather tightly to her chest. It was just a simple novel which the young woman had read over and over again. The book spoke about love and romance, yet even after several read-throughs of every page, Emily still couldn't understand the word or feeling. She had thought she felt it once, just once. But it wasn't meant to be. Running a hand through her hair, the young woman turned and headed up a staircase which she knew to lead somewhere. Well, not exactly somewhere, to someone. As she drew near, Emily began to hear the scratching of a quill on parchment and a small smile came to her lips.
"What are you writing?"
Emily's words were somewhat quiet as she sat down a few steps below Dexter, and placed the book onto her lap. The two had been friends for a few years now, and over the course of their frienship, Emily had found that she didn't have to hide behind her mask while she was around Dex. The young woman usually hid behind a mask around almost everyone, as she suffered from self confidence issues. She didn't believe people would like her for her true self. At first, Emily thought that Dexter only talked to her out of pity. Yet as time went by, she found him to be the most genuine friend she had - despite the fact he was a year younger than her.
Flicking open her book, Emily traced her fingers over the first few sentence as a confused smile came to her lips. Her smile lit up the room and her eyes sparkled more bright than anything I had ever seen. This was how I knew. How I knew that I loved her. Shaking her head slightly, the young woman closed her book and turned her attention back towards Dex, waiting for his answer.

up with the birds ,
dex heard the familiar step that only belonged to his best friend emily harrison. he smiled to himself as he wrote, he was glad to have some company with him. it was always better to write alone but that got lonely quick. his mind racing with the next sentence as he wrote on the pad of parchment. emily knew that dex didn't talk much when he wrote and had a huge idea, she was accustomed to waiting a minute for him to finish a sentence or two. otherwise, he'd feel like he was leaving a part of a story out. his dream was to become a writer at the daily prophet. it was all he ever wanted all his life, he strived for it. as the pitter patter of emily's steps came to the top of the stair case he adjusted his glasses and he only had a couple more sentences to go until his thought was finished.
dex heard her ask what he was writing about, he smiled to let her know he was listening but he needed a second. after a couple more scribbles of his quill he put down his pad. "a tragic love story, they're my favourite." he put his quill down on the cement ground and his pad next to it. "is that a new book emily?" he asked raising a brow, he was always the bigger nerd out of the two. dex was used to always telling emily the newest books he's read. dex glanced over, taking off his glasses he only used for reading or writing. "oh a romance novel? that's unlike you." he furrowed his brow in curiosity. dex was glad her romantic side was coming out, it seemed emily sometime's just flirted with people because it was fun. he adored her caring nature though, she was well liked by a lot of guys actually.

[atrb=width,400] Interrupting Dexter was one thing that Emily hated to do. Herself and her sister had grown up with the boy, thus they knew all his quirks and how he worked. Laughing a little to herself as she watched his lips curl upwards into a smile, Emily looked back towards her book as her eyebrows furrowed together once more. The concept of love really was confusing. But Zarah seemed to understand it. The younger sibling had been boasting about how much she loves love ever since the siblings started going to Hogwarts. Emily had thought her sister to be in love, but never got around to questioning her.
"A tragic love story? Very much like you." Emily spoke, before tracing her fingers over the gold, bold lettering on the front cover of her book. "I tried to get it to explain to me what love was... I've read it three times now. I still have no idea." Frowning, Emily pouted a little before resting her head on Dexter's knee. Her eyes closed for a minute as her mind began to think up some of the key words and phrases the book had used while Quintin was courting Eloise. Your eyes are like shimmering pools. I could get lost in them for days. Love is when you can be your complete self around someone, and not have to hide anything. That's the way I see myself with you.
Sighing, Emily opened her eyes and stared towards the ceiling. Shaking her head, the young woman turned her head slightly and looked towards Dex. "Atleast one of us understands love."

dex thought about what love meant to him, it meant a lot of different things to him. love came in many shapes and forms on this earth, there was motherly love, sisterly love, and the love that was unconditional from a partner. there was animal love and there was love out of pure lust. there were many different types of love, some good and some was pure evil. that controlling type of love was mostly toxic but those in that toxic kind of love didn't realize it. dex had a huge heart but didn't show it to many people. those who deserved to see the softer more kinder side of him got to see it. his grandfather taught him to be a tough shell of a man on the outside and to be a real softy around the ladies, they loved stuff like that. that lesson didn't need to be taught to him, he already knew. he wasn't just the guy who always had his nose in a book, he was much deeper than that. dex was the guy who lied awake at night thinking of the girl who he liked. he would stay up wondering if she ever felt the same. he felt a sudden pang in his stomach that he realized he was in love with the same girl for over half his life.
"yeah i know, it's one of my favourite genres." he half-smiled but realized emily wouldn't see it unless she looked up. he watched as she traced a hand over the gold lettering across the book. as emily answered his question she laid her head on his lap. he took a piece of stray hair and put it behind her ear gently. "don't fret em, everyone has their own definition of love. you just haven't found yours just yet." dex said softly, his words of wisdom muffled by emotions he felt comfortable enough to convey. he watched as she closed her eyes, she must've been thinking about something. dex looked towards the window of the tower, taking a second to think to himself too. he had never told emily about his old crush on her or how madly in love he was with her younger sister. there was no way he would tell her, they were too close and she'd just spill the beans to her. dex glanced over to emily and saw her looking at him. he sighed softly, "love is a complicated thing, it'd be difficult for one to explain their own definition of love. if you want a generic greeting card explanation of it then i'd love to provide one." he smiled softly. dex knew emily didn't really understand love, she was one special girl then. love was complicated and it hurt when you knew you were in it. "love is a beautiful mess." he said thinking about his current situation.

[atrb=width,400] As Dex spoke about how everyone had their own definition of love, Emily's eyebrows clashed together in thought. She wondered what her own definition of love would be, and she thought back to the time she had thought she felt something for Paxton. He had been two grades above her and the two had gotten close during his final year - closer than Emily had been with Dexter. At one point, she thought that she loved him and that she finally understood love.
After he graduated, Emily asked if they could go into Hogsmeade for some butterbeers and she planned on telling him of her feelings. Yet, he had shown up with his new girlfriend and her heart shattered as well as her understanding of love. He was now a Professor at Hogwarts, and seeing him almost every day reminded Emily of her lost feelings. Since that day, the only guy she had was Dexter. Sure, she flirted and hung around a few of the other young men in her year; yet that was just harmless fun.
"The girl who fills your heart will be the luckiest one, Dex." Emily had finally spoken, beaming up at the male. At that moment, Emily wondered why she had never felt anything besides friendship for Dexter. He was one of the most handsome guys in Hogwarts, and the only one she truly felt like she could be her full self around. Dexter never seemed to judge her when she showed who she really was. And whenever she was around him, he allowed her self confidence to soar through the roof. Yet there was just never that spark there. The only love she had for Dex, was that of a best friend and a teacher about the confusing emotion. "Besides, I've read all the greeting cards. None of them hold an answer. I wish I could just figure out this damn emotion. It's not fun..."

up with the birds ,
dex remembered briefly at one point where emily had gone out with this older boy for some time. his name was peter? no, something more unique. peyton? no that didn't sound right. dex really thought about it and he remembered emily bringing him up sometime's in conversations. paxton! he was now a professor at hogwarts. dex was never in his classes though, he was glad he avoided the guy though. the guy hurt emily so bad. the change in her eyes after their meetup was tragic. she refused to talk much about it so dex just decided to stay up with her and eat candy all night to make her feel better. it was sad seeing her so distraught.
dex avoided the guy at all costs now, he didn't want to make him feel bad but deep down he just wanted emily to be happy. if this guy made her happy and he didn't hurt her ever again maybe he'd be in his good books. for now, he wasn't too keen on putting him back in his good books. he really thought about it and he loved emily in the sisterly way. there was a time long ago he actually had a crush on emily but those days were long gone. his feelings for zarah were more and more apparent as each day passed. he was shocked that emily hadn't figured out the chemistry between the two. he wasn't too sure either if emily's flirtatious attitude towards boys was applied to him. she was affectionate towards dex, maybe that was a sign of comfort around him.
"i'm very doubtful that a girl would even notice me or my feelings." he sighed, he was put into the friendzone by way to many girls to have an actual girlfriend. he wasn't really sure why girls didn't see him more than as a friend. when he liked a girl he made them feel like a princess. "greeting cards are very boring, i think making your own card is always more fun and personal." he smiled lightly. love was a confusing emotion that could make you feel on top of the world or like you hit rock bottom. dex just wasn't sure where he was on the scale, when he was hanging with zarah he was on top of the world. when he was away from her he felt like rock bottom. "i can explain love to you from my perspective." he said looking down at emily, "love is a complicated yet beautiful thing. it's that fuzzy feeling you get when you're around someone. that someone though you have to feel completely safe and secure around that you can just be yourself. love is imagining your life and that person being in your future, you just can't live without them. love is after being away from that person for so long you just feel complete happiness when you see them. if you're truly in love then a long time away from that person is like a day because you can't stand going longer than that." dex was thinking of the way he felt about zarah and how he felt around her while saying all of this.

[atrb=width,400] Emily had never had a night like the one she had with Dexter after she had come back from Hogsmeade. Paxton had told her that he was dating someone else, and had actually brought her along to their meetup. She was beautiful, to say the least, and Emily felt like a dim light next to her sunshine like beauty. The young woman had to avert her eyes towards the floor as not to show that a few tears were slipping from her eyes. She thought she had loved Paxton, with all her heart and her soul. But it simply wasn't meant to be. Ever since he had become a Professor, however, her heart fluttered slightly when she went to one of his studies. She loved the fact that he was so interested in muggles, and it made her love the class even more. However there was always that pang of ache in her heart whenever she looked at him.
A small sigh escaped Emily's lips as she remembered back and she sat up. Upon hearing Dexter's words about how he was doubtful that a girl would notice him, she smiled a little and kissed his cheek. "Don't be so silly. Alot of girls notice you. They just know that Zarah and I will destroy them if they hurt you in any way." Winking, Emily laughed a little and leaned back against the stone wall encasing the stairway. Whenever she was around Dex, she would always feel happy. He brought out a side to her that she didn't even know existed. Sure, she would act in a similar fashion around other people, however that was forced. Yet she never really flirted, the young woman figured that the guys had enough of that from every other girl, thus she remained the one they could talk to and not have to deal with winks and hints and passes.
"I know I would prefer it if a guy went to the trouble to make me a card rather than go and buy one. It feels like it's actually from in... here." Pointing towards her chest, Emily looked down before slowly dropping her hand at how Dexter was describing his take on love. The way he described it, almost sounded as if he was in love. Emily's eyebrows furrowed together in thought as she lifted her head and began to think. Who would Dex have feelings for? "Dearest Dexter. I know for a fact that you feel all of that for some girl. No matter how good you are at writing love stories, that came from your heart." Turning her whole body towards the other, the young woman beamed up at him and rested her head on her hands. "I promise I won't tell."

up with the birds ,
paxton was silly for wanting anyone else other than emily, she was a gem and she deserved the best. he could tell by the way she spoke about his class at times she was still hung up over him. it was sad to think that she had to see him on a daily basis. dex really had no clue about how breakups went, he was usually the one girls cried to for advice when they needed him. he didn't mind being the crying shoulder it felt good to be needed. dex had this ache his heart whenever a crying girl came running over claiming another guy "broke her heart". no matter how hard dex tried, these girls pulled on his heartstrings making him feel for them. as much as he hated it he was pretty empathetic, he put himself in their shoes and try to understand it from their point of views. he would stay up till 3am until they fell asleep from being tired of crying, he'd then put them in their beds and he went to bed.
emily sighed then moved to kiss his cheek and smile. dex perked up immediately, he knew he shouldn't feel so doubtful of himself. "i wouldn't have it any other way dear." dex smiled down to emily. without the sisters he wouldn't be anyone, they made him smile everyday and endless pits of laughter whenever the three were together. "if any guy hurts you, he's in for endless amounts of death stares and witty remarks from my part." dex laughed lightly, he had already done that to paxton. whenever he passed him by in the halls dex would shoot him a cold glance. he didn't hate the guy, he actually was a good guy but his choice of women made him cringe.
"you deserve all the handmade cards in the world em." dex said looking at where she pointed, it was towards her heart. he hoped that emily started to realized the true meaning of love. he also hoped that she never realized he was secretly in love with her younger sister. that might not ruin one friendship, he might make things awkward between him and emily as well. she lifted her head and glanced at dex, she had a curious look in her eyes. dex was in for trouble he knew it. she turned around fully and rested her head in her hands. dex sighed and rolled his eyes playfully before returning his gaze to her, "i'm sorry em, i can't tell you because there is no girl." dex lied smoothly, he was good at lying which could be a bad or good thing, in this instance it was a good thing. "i've just read way too many romance novels." he shrugged and smiled to himself. "you really can't think of anyone you loved?" dex raised an eyebrow, "i promise i won't tell." dex repeated what emily said, mimicking her tone of voice and everything.

[atrb=width,400] Emily couldn't help but smile when Dexter retaliated when she spoke about hurting any girl who hurt him. A small laugh followed her smile as she heard what he would do to someone who hurt her. "So I'm guessing that's what you're doing to Pax- ... Professor Tauros?" It was strange to have to call the male Professor. Whenever she was the last one in the classroom and she needed his attention, she would call him by his first name. But outside of the classroom, she would reffer to him as Professor. Looking down towards the floor, she remembered back to that day once more and sighed.
"You're so sweet Dex. Why can't all guys be like you?" Resting her head on his shoulder, Emily closed her eyes and thought about what the world would be like if more guys were actually like Dexter. If that was to happen, it would make Dex less special, and Emily didn't want that. Sitting up, the young woman shook her head. "Actually, no. Just one Dexter is enough. Because then I can say that I have the only one." Grinning, Emily laughed a little at his question and she shook her head.
There wasn't really anyone she had ever loved. Besides her family, but that wasn't the same. Dexter was brotherly love, as she never felt anything more than that towards him. Paxton was the only person who came close. "I thought I loved Paxton. Whenever anyone would simply mention his name, I had butterflies. When we talked, I felt as comfortable around him as I am with you and Zarah. But... After that day, I felt so numb. I feel like I've gone deeper inside my shell than I had been before. Now, I don't feel as comfortable around him as I used to. All I see is him and her. The one who's beauty out-shines everything." A few tears slipped from her eyes as she shook her head and leaned her head against the wall. "Maybe that was my one chance at love, and I blew it. I'm not allowed to get a second chance."
