as luce settled down onto the log, lily curled up against him, legs locking behind his back. it had been years since she'd curled up to him like that, the last time she could remember being when she was six. yet she didn't care if she looked silly, she wanted to be as close to him as possible, to calm not only herself down, but to try and calm luce down as well. it's not.. it's not right. but the thoughts just don't go away. they keep pushing and pushing no matter what i do and it's just not fair. lifting her small hands to his face, lily ran her thumb across his cheek bone, eyes looking everywhere but his. her stomach was a tight ball of emotion, and no matter what she did to try and distract herself from the feeling, she couldn't push it away. leaning forward, she placed a tentative kiss on his chin, then his cheek, then his forehead. i just. i don't know what to do, what to say.. what to think. it's all so much. with a deep breath, lily dropped her hands and tangled her fingers together between them, mind racing. "don't think and don't say anything, then." she finally answered, her voice a light whisper that could have easily gotten lost in the wind had luce not been sitting under her, yet it was easier said than done. "i love you, lucey. i'm always gonna love you. forever and always."

not thinking was never a strong suit of luce. he could push things to the back of his mind but usually when the sun went down, his thoughts turned their volume up. he didn't know how to handle the stress without alcohol. he knew it was a horrid problem and it's what caused him the most fear: that he would turn out like his dad eventually. though, with all of the rude things luce had ever said to someone, he had hardly ever hurt anyone. the only few people he had punched were people who had made fun of lily, and that was about as far as his violence went. he would do anything to see a smile on his sister's face, even if that meant doing something that was completely wrong. he didn't know whether to smile or cry at the fact that lily was actually trying to comfort him. he hated being weak. he let his guard down around her, but never to this extent. every other time he had a panic attack, he had waited until she was asleep or in class or something. he wanted her to look up to him, to see that even through everything he was strong. he didn't want her to see him as just the broken little kid that he really was inside. his mind was a mysterious place, just like that of everyone else, but luce was sure his was quite a bit more messed up than those around him. lily understood the things that haunted him, and that's what made him love her all the more.
he furrowed his eyebrows and looked down at lily's hands that were all wrapped up in themselves. he wrapped his own hands around hers and brought them to his lips. he kissed her fingers lightly, then breathed some hot air on them to warm them up. he rubbed his hands against them then dropped them down between them again, still keeping hold of her. "i love you too, lils. that's.. that's why this whole thing is so hard." luce couldn't manage to get his voice about a whisper. it hurt his lungs too much, so he just shut up. he leaned his forehead down to rest on lily's, leaving a soft kiss on the cold tip of her nose. he closed his eyes and attempted a deep breath, holding back the cough that wanted to follow it out. he wished he had a blanket or something to wrap around them, because he really didn't want to put his clothes back on while he was still dripping. then again, he didn't want to move at all. in that spot, his mind slowly quieting down a little, heart racing, luce felt at ease. he didn't know how, but he did.

licking at her lips, lils closed her eyes and sighed, forehead against his. i love you too, lils. that's.. that's why this whole thing is so hard. the answer ran through her mind a few times, body taking a minute to process what he'd said. "may-maybe it doesn't have to be so hard." she mumbled, leaning in close to flutter her eyelashes against his. "maybe this is all supposed to be easy, and... and over-thinking everything is making it hard." unsure of what she was really trying to say, the weight of the situation seemed to slam down on her shoulders as she realized the gravity of it all. choking on her words, lily licked at her lips once more. she'd never cared much for what others thought about her, and even if the other students found out about what had happened between them the other night, lily didn't think she would really care. she tended to live in her own littler world, cocooned by drugs, stories, and lucifer. besides, everyone already thought she was insane. the only thing that kept her from encouraging it, however, was the nagging voice in the back of her mind that kept whispering, 'he's your brother, he's your brother'. for once in her life, her mind was a mess. she thought she had the whole thing under control, but in seconds it was back to where it had been minutes before in the lake. a shiver ran down her spine, and with a sharp intake of breath, she leaned in as close as she could without actually touching her lips to his.

luce didn't handle confusion well. he was always an organized mess, able to organize which thoughts stayed quiet when need be. he didn't like that he was completely on edge in every way at that moment, because that meant he couldn't think of a solution. was there even a real way to solve the mess that he and lily were in? it's not like someone can just change how they feel, especially when it came to someone that they're as close to as luce was with lily. he wished he had an on-off switch for his feelings. it would make life so much easier. but now that he thought of it, luce was sure that his life just wasn't meant to be easy. he had proven that he could make it through just about anything, but lily was the only reason he could. if it wasn't for her, he was sure he would have just let his father make him disappear like he probably wanted. but luce had a job in life, and that was to protect lily. she would probably say that she could take care of herself, but that wasn't acceptable in luce's eyes. he just wanted to spend his life taking care of himself and lily, away from their parents' grasp.
the feeling of lily's breath against him as he spoke sent chills down luce's spine again. he kept his eyes closed, unable to open them to face reality. what if things didn't have to be as complicated as he was making it out to be? luce had always listened to people talking about how when you really love someone, society's view on whether it should or shouldn't be that way didn't matter. the thing is, once you're really in that situation where it's just completely wrong, then you aren't sure what to think. that was just the case for luce. he didn't know whether to he should just say fuck it or to back off until he could make the feelings disappear. with lily, though, he was sure that they never would. she was his sister, and he would always love her. his mind was made up. he didn't care what other people were going to say or about the looks he would get. luce wasn't going to let society ruin this. he could feel the presence of lily's lips just millimeters from his own. carefully, luce lifted his hand up to caress her cheek and he closed the small gap. it sent a whirl of emotions through him, stomach churning and head spinning in circles. then suddenly, it all stopped. his body lost it's tenseness, his mind shut off, and he was just.. comfortable.

eyes fluttering open, lily caught luce's lips with her own, body melting as his hand cupped her cheek. the swirling, nauseous feeling that had been stuck in her stomach since the night before intensified for a brief moment before simmering away, leaving her body warm and buzzing with adrenaline. lips parting slightly, lil's hands drifted up from his shoulders to the back of his head, fingers toying with the hair at the nape of his neck. this, this was better than the night before. it was as if every fiber of her being matched up perfectly with his, responding to his touch and movement with a fire she'd never knew existed. 'this must be what they talk about in fairy tales,' was the main thought racing through her mind before she finally pulled away from him. her chest was rising and falling, lungs begging for the air that she'd neglected to give them during the past few moments. with a genuine smile, lily licked at her lips curiously and inched forward to kiss luce's forehead. she wasn't quite sure where this rush of confidence had come from, but she didn't dislike it. not one bit.

luce honestly felt as if he didn't know what he was doing anymore. his body was figuratively separated from his mind. but for the first time in his seventeen years of life, lucifer burton felt real happiness in that moment. not just the last-a-moment kind, or the kind that was induced by alcohol, but real happiness. he felt safe, sitting there curled up with lily, their lips locked together. when lily pulled away, luce noticed that the entire time they had been kissing, he had forgotten how to breathe. he'd taken a deep breath before, but now that he was breathing again, he realized that he had held his breath the entire time. as if breathing would make the whole moment disappear. he felt a smile creep over his lips, actually reaching his blue eyes that normally were dull and emotionless. the smile widened a little as lil's lips met his forehead. nobody else in the world existed to lucifer at that moment. they were the only two there. this was more than just some silly dream he had, because it was actually happening and he was sober for once in his life.
he didn't know what to say, but a cool breeze told him that they needed to get dressed and back into the warm dungeon common room, preferably curled up in front of the fireplace with a blanket and some cocoa. however, since he hated sneaking to the kitchen and dealing with the little elves in there, he'd live with just a blanket and lily. he no longer cared about the looks he was going to get. his body shook with a shiver, which made him laugh a bit. "alright, c'mon, let's get dressed and go curl in front of the fire, yeah?" he tucked some of lily's hair behind her ear and then ran his hand through his own, smiling. the happiness, which he had expected to fade, was still just sticking to him. it showed, as his smile stuck on his face half-way, one side of his mouth curled up in a crooked yet content grin. he sat lily down on the log and went over to grab their clothes, bringing them back over and placing them next to her small frame. he slid back into his clothes and waited for her, watching slightly in his side vision. "you want a piggy back ride back?" he offered, smiling still.

"you're beautiful," she whispered, running a careful finger over his stretched lips.
shaking out of her trance, the girl waiting patiently on the log as luce disappeared to get her clothes, still in a state of lucid happiness as she watched him slip into his jeans. carefully, she reached beside her and tugged on her shorts, hands shaking only slightly from the cold. you want a piggy back ride back? the question hung in the air for a moment as she slipped into her t-shirt, bones sticking through the fabric like a pile of sticks. finally, she tugged on her sneakers and with one leap off the log, lily was clinging to his back like the monkey she'd always been. "make sure you run fast, lucey. i want to feel like i'm flying," with a soft giggle that sounded like a chorus of bells, the girl leaned forward and kissed his neck, eyes wide and ready to head back toward the castle.

for once in his life, luce felt free. nobody and nothing in the world was of any importance other than him and lily. he was going to write to his father in the morning and write to him every day until he said that lily could live with luce after he finished school. it was still the beginning of the year though, so that was only in the back of his mind as he felt the natural high of life take over his mind. he had never felt such intense feelings in his life. not even the hate for his parents was as strong as he felt in that moment. luce felt as if he could do anything he wanted with life. he wondered if this was how most people felt on a daily basis. it wasn't that luce wasn't a confident kid, he just wasn't one of the overly cocky guys who would always say he could do anything he put his mind to. his father had taken the ability to think that way from him when he was young, but lily had given it back to him. the fact that she called him beautiful sent a soft chuckle across his lips. "thanks, but you're the beautiful one, lils." he grinned and placed a gentle kiss on her cheek.
giving lily piggy back rides was as familiar as breathing for luce. even as a two year old, when lily was born luce would carry her everywhere she needed to go. the most that their parents did to chip in in the parenting department was providing enough food to survive. luce potty trained himself and his sister, taught them both how to read, and was always there to protect the younger girl. he'd given her piggy back rides to the bus stop every morning when they were in elementary school. when he started at hogwarts, the routine fell. but when he came home to visit he would take lily on adventures through the town, always carrying her on his back or holding her hand. when she was sorted into slytherin on her first day at hogwarts, he had been so excited. he pushed whoever was sitting next to him over and welcomed her to the table with open arms, congratulating her. so running with lily's smaller frame clung to his back like a money was an easy task. he ran towards the castle, laughing. by the time they were back inside and down to the dungeons, luce was out of breath. he laughed lightly, still not putting lily down. slowing his pace, luce gave the password and entered the slytherin common room, which was mostly empty now. "looks like everyone pooped out to bed. ah well, more fire for us." luce walked over and dropped lily onto the couch before jogging to go grab a blanket. when he returned, he plopped himself down next to her and pulled her close, draping the blanket over them and letting out a content sigh.

"can you feel it, lucey?" she screamed, covering his eyes momentarily with her cold hands. "we're soaring! higher than ever before!" closing her eyes once again, she let the rush take control, adrenaline kicking in where it had left off not five minutes before. for once, the girl was filled with a happy memory, one that didn't paralyze her out of fear or remind her of a time when lucifer was brutally beaten. this time, she was reminded of her first day at hogwarts when luce had taken her around and shown her all his favourite spots, most of which he'd never told a soul about. it was one of the few happy memories she'd held onto all this time, and it brought a huge smile to her face as she wound her arms around his shoulders, nuzzling her nose into the crook of his neck as they dipped inside the castle doors.
the warmth of the great hall hit her like a truck, but it was a pleasant feeling, one that she welcomed with open arms. as they raced through the halls, lily felt like she was in a film, but the viewer had hit the fast forward button in order to get to their favourite part. in what felt like minutes, she was being dropped onto the worn-out slytherin common room couch, her legs tangling together as she squirmed to get comfortable. as the fire burned brightly, lily couldn't have been more content to do absolutely nothing, especially with luce by her side. if this had been a film, she guessed this would have been the scene where the first kiss happened, though they'd already been through that. not that the person watching was aware of that, of course. with a lazy smile and a soft laugh at her ridiculousness, lily scooted as close as she could when luce joined her on the sofa, curling up under the blanket like a cat."thanks," she mumbled, resting her head against his shoulder as she yawned, hand searching for his. "can you tell me a story?" she asked, looking up at him with a pleading smile. "one about a night, maybe. who falls in love with a faerie."

exploring the castle was one of the best memories that luce had, especially with lily. they would find secret passages or little hidden rooms all around. it was like no matter how many times they went on an exploration mission, they still found more and more spots to hide together. he would always have those memories, and he held them near when he started to panic. having lily curled up against him warmed him up, inside and out. for once, luce's heart was at a steady, happy beat. "a knight and a faerie, hm?" luce smiled and looked into the fire, the images of the story he was about to tell playing in his mind. though he wouldn't admit it, luce was artistic when it came to stories. if he really tried, he could probably become an author. but luce didn't want the attention that came with it. so, he focused on the story at hand.
he started a tad sarcastic. "once upon a time," he started, rolling his eyes at the cliche before continuing, "there was a young, beautiful faerie. her hair was as gold as the sun, eyes as blue as the ocean. she was still adjusting to her new life as a faerie, and she was exploring the kingdom to do so." luce squinted at the fire, imagining everything play out. "one day while she was on an adventure, she bumped into a knight on a mission to slay a dragon to win the princess' heart. 'why would you harm such a majestic creature?' the faerie asked, baffled. 'well, the king has sent me to do it so that i may wed the princess.' to the knight, it just seemed like the right thing to do." luce made sure to change his tone of voice for each character, in order to tell them apart. "it was custom, you see, for a knight in his shining armour to win the princess' heart. 'why do you wish to marry the princess?' the faerie inquired on the travel to the dragon's lair. the question shocked the knight, because no matter how much he thought of it, he didn't have an answer."
luce pulled his wand out of his pocket and flicked it, whispering a small spell so that the images in his mind would play out in the flames. with a smile, he continued. "the knight stopped in his tracks and looked at the faerie, question all over his face. 'do you love her?' she asked him as he stared. the knight shook his head. 'i've never met her, you see. but if i marry the princess, then the king will provide us with all the money we need to have a family.' the faerie was so confused now. 'why would you want a family with someone you don't know you love?' she asked. the knight wondered where all of the questions came from." luce continued on with the story, until finally it reached an end, finally. "the knight told the king that he could not kill the harmless dragon, and he and the faerie went to the faerie queen next. she granted her the ability to transform into a human when needed, and the knight and the faerie lived happily ever after." luce smiled softly, stroking lily's hair gently.

"yes, yes please." she mumbled, squirming in her spot with excitement as she waited for the tale to begin. when he finally started, lily listened in awe, eyes as wide as a child's. gasping in the appropriate places, lily reached forward and grabbed handfuls of luce's shirt when things got intense, turning to him with a look of distress before things smoothed out again. no matter what, lily always seemed to turn into an innocent kid when a story was being told. she always wanted to believe in the best of the characters, and anytime something happened, it was like she was living through it right next to them.
...and the knight and the faerie lived happily ever after. with a smile that took up her whole face, lily clapped quietly at the end, pulling herself up enough to kiss the corner of his mouth. "that was great!" she sang, waving her hands through the air to emphasize just how much. turning to him, she cupped luce's face in her hands, crawling into his lap. "will you be my knight?" she asked, head tilting to the side curiously. she knew he didn't consider himself to be a hero, but no matter what he said, luce always would be in lily's eyes. "and i'll be your faerie." with a softer smile, she braced her arms against the back of the couch, leaning in to press her lips to his. finally being able to do so without feeling awkward still baffled her, but she couldn't stop herself. lily felt a little like a young girl that had rediscovered her favourite childhood toy, and even though she'd always loved it, she had a newfound admiration for it.

one thing that luce had always loved to watch was lily's reactions to everything that happened in the story. he had to keep his focus on the fire's movements, but out of the corner of his eyes he could see lily's reaction to every little thing that happened, and feel as she stretched his shirt in her hands. her innocence when he told stories was so adorable. he had always loved to see every movement she made in anticipation as the story got more and more into detail. ever since they were young, luce had always managed to find a way to keep her at the edge of her seat. he had never admitted to it, but every romance story that slipped out of luce's imagination had a hint of he and lily in it. the couple always somehow connected back to them and their bond that they held. a bond that nobody else ever would understand. luce was completely fine with that fact, though. he didn't need the approval of people who didn't understand. people tended to judge too much, and that's exactly why lucifer didn't give a damn what any of them were going to have to say about his feelings. they were his feelings, after all, not their's.
after the kiss ended, luce grinned. "i would be honored to be your knight, m'lady." the corners of his eyes crinkled as he smiled at his use of m'lady. he'd said it in stories before, but never actually to someone and meant it. it felt odd on his tongue, but he liked it. there was nothing left in luce's life that wasn't odd, so he didn't care anymore. he wasn't going to let anything ruin his mood that he hadn't felt in.. well, ever. he brought his lips down to lily's for a soft kiss that seemed to end too soon, and then he placed his forehead comfortably on hers. "i love you, lilypad," he almost whispered, smiling sincerely. he lifted his hand up and gently ran his finger tips along her face, down her jaw-line, along her neck, and then rested his hand on the back of her neck as he brought his lips to hers for what seemed like the hundreth time. yet, even if it felt like they had been kissing all night, it still sent a tingling sensation from his lips all the way down his spine in pure joy. luce wished he could just pause life and stay like this forever.

i would be honored to be your knight, m'lady. squirming in his lap, lily lifter her hands to his face another time, running her finger tips over his laugh lines. she didn't think she'd ever get used to them, and it didn't really bother her. they were beautiful, and she loved that he was able to be so content with her. "i love it when you smile," she grinned, dropping her hands to his shoulders when he leaned in for another kiss. breath catching in her throat, her hands fluttered to the back of his neck, leaning in close to his ear. "i love you more, lucey." with a sheepish grin, the girl shivered under his touch and didn't hesitate when he brought his lips to hers again, this time lingering longer. as cliché as it sounded, every time she kissed the boy, it felt like the first time - a burning sensation danced through her, and the longer they stayed like that, the more content she was.

there were bound to be obstacles in the future for the two of them. luce knew that he and lily would never have a "normal" life, but they never had to begin with so he was perfectly fine with just that. he wasn't going to start thinking of anything that would be coming for them, because he was perfectly happy right where he was. he had never smiled so much in his life, and it felt rejuvinating to actually feel happy. the scowl that was normally on his face felt like a memory in that moment. luce honestly felt as if he could start bouncing he had so much energy balling up inside of him. lily had always gotten him to let his energy out in interesting ways such as exploring or telling stories, but this was a whole new situation. this was an energy brought on by the sensation of lily's lips on his over and over. he felt as if they were their own faerie tale endings. and just like in every story, there would be good and bad moments. in the end though, love conquers all, right? luce would do everything in his power to give lily just that. he had never been a sap or anything, but lily brought it out somehow. she always managed to make him be real, rather than just the shell that most people knew.
before he could argue with lily saing she loved him more, their lips were intertwined together. this kiss was longer than the others, and luce could swear he forgot how to breathe again. he didn't care how cliche it was to have someone take his breath away, because that was just what lily did for him. when the kiss finally broke, luce felt a yawn overtake him. it was a lot later than he had expected. "what'dyou say we go get some sleep, lils?" his smile was tired, just like him, but it was still sincere. he suddenly felt exhausted. though he was sure that he wouldn't actually sleep with all of the energy balled up in his stomach, luce was ready to curl up in the familiar bed with lily curled against him and a blanket that was actually able to cover his feet. luce stood before lily could and picked her up like a groom would his bride, blanket still on top of her. he kissed her forehead gently and headed into the boys' dormitory, where just about everyone was already dead asleep. he gently placed lily down and got her under the comforter before climbing in next to her and wrapping his arms securely around her. "goodnight, my faerie." he placed a tender kiss on the tip of her nose and cuddled as close as possible.
