up with the birds ,
the ravenclaw common room was always crowded and filled with people. it was hard to do anything productive in there, dex had no plans of doing anything today. it was the weekend, he didn't want to go off to hogsmeade with anyone or go out. he wanted to stay in and just relax by the fire. there was a few people running about the dormitory but he ignored them. he had run into zarah earlier today and both of them agreed to just stay in this weekend and have their own fun. he loved the harrison sisters, he always loved both of them to death. he had known both of them for as long as he could remember. it was a shame that emily was in a different house than zarah and himself but that didn't mean anything. dex had his current tragic love story he had been writing in hand, he was reading over it making small adjustments here and there. he wasn't really into writing today, he just wanted to kick back and relax with his best friend.
dex was excited to see zarah --even though he did everyday. they hung out every opportunity they could get, he was in love with the girl. dex always tried to like other girls but something about zarah made him hooked. when he was growing up he had a crush on emily for the longest time but then he realized that was silly and he had no chance with her. since then, he's "liked" other girls but they never really quite worked out for him. something kept pulling him closer and closer to zarah, no matter how hard he tried to stop liking her he just couldn't. dex told her everything, every secret he had he told her. there was just one thing he refused to tell her... that he was hopelessly in love with his best friend. dex sighed and pushed away his romantic thoughts and tried to focus himself on editing his story. it was hopeless though, he never could get her off his mind. dex pushed his reading glasses further onto the bridge of his nose and enjoyed the warmth coming from the fireplace.

The three were best friends, yet Zarah always seemed to be that little bit closer to the male. The two would sneak off to the river at the back of her mother's property and simply sit and talk. It was those times that the young woman soon realised that she had a crush on Dexter. She would always smile whenever he was around and try to sit closer to him on the log when they stared out at the water. Zarah's mother thought the two were cute and would end up as childhood sweethearts. But Zarah soon figured out that Dex had a crush on Emily, thus she tried to push her feelings to the back of her mind. She didn't want to compete with her sister.
Spinning around in a circle, Zarah crashed down on her bed as she laughed and stared up at the ceiling. Most of the girls were out of the dorm by now, but she was too busy dancing around to care. Her and Dexter had decided that they would remain indoors. What they would be doing, she had no idea; just as long as she got to hang out with Dex. The feelings she held for Dex never really left. Every time she would attempt to push them to the back of her mind, they would come back swinging with full force. That was one of the reasons Zarah had never had a boyfriend. She had hid the fact that she had never been kissed from everyone, including Dex. However that was the only secret she had kept from him. Sighing, the female sat up and changed her clothes into a pair of jeans and a t-shirt yet left her feet uncovered. "It's show time" Pointing at herself in the mirror, Zarah clicked her tongue before winking and laughing. That was her personality in a nut-shell. Fun.
Removing herself from the room, Zarah walked down the stairs towards the Ravenclaw Common Room as quiet as a mouse. Her face lit up when she saw the familiar head of hair sitting by the fire place and she threaded herself between the bodies of people that had gathered in random parts of the room. Sneaking up behind the sofa, Zarah waited for the perfect moment before cupping her hands over Dexter's face. "Guess who Mr. Dex-Dex.". |

dex couldn't pin point the exact moment and exact time in his life that he started growing feelings for zarah. he just woke up one morning and they were there, growing each day and every moment they spent together. sure, he liked other girls but they were never good enough for him. it was cocky to think this, it was just difficult swallowing the thought that there were many girls who were wonderful but none as wonderful as zarah. no one could ever replace what she meant to him, they shared a close bond. one that could never be sacrificed or damaged. they never really got into fights and when they did they ended up apologizing within an hour or two. dex usually giving in after the initial fight. he couldn't stay mad at zarah for long, he couldn't handle losing her. the thought of losing her made his heart ache and his mind dizzy.
as dex sat by the fire he listened as groups of people were leaving for hogsmeade for dinner. they sounded really excited to leave, as some yelled a goodbye to dex over the couch he just waved one hand to signal that their goodbye didn't go unacknowledged. his quill was slow to hit the page, he was growing tired. dex didn't want to go to bed not before seeing zarah one last time. he would probably end up falling asleep on the couch while they had one of their famous heart to hearts that lasted late into the nights.
dex's felt to hands fly up to his eyes and a familiar comforting voice that made his heart feel like jelly. he grinned as he was happy to hear zarah finally come down from her room. "could it be?!" he started, his voice dramatic, "the famous harry potter back from the dead?!" he joked with her. as her hands slipped from his face he smiled to his delight it was actually way better than seeing harry potter. "finally the princess has left her room." he laughed lightly, it took awfully long for her to come down from her room today. "you look wonderful like always zarah." dex complimented, his eyes scanning over her wonderfully curled blonde hair and her beautiful smile that took his breath away everytime it appeared.

Not just the cute, little butterflies that most teenagers got towards the opposite sex. No. Zarah felt herself being pulled towards Dexter like his being was some sort of magnet. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't put her feelings for him to the back of her mind. The young woman knew that Dexter would never feel the same way about her, thus she continued to try and put the feelings at bay.
"Don't blame me if you won't come and find me." Zarah laughed, spinning around to the other side of the sofa and landing with a soft thud. Leaning backwards, the young woman twirled a blonde curl inbetween her fingers as she sat cross-legged next to her best friend. As he spoke about the way she looked, Zarah blushed a little and bit down on her lower lip. It didn't matter how mant times Dex would compliment her, the girl would always blush. She enjoyed getting compliments, however when they left the lips of her best friend, it always made her butterflies flutter faster and grow in numbers.
Letting go of her curl, Zarah un-crossed her legs and moved closer to Dexter. Upon resting her head on his shoulder, the young woman looked down at his piece of parchment and smiled. "What's that for? Another one of your amazing stories?!" Lifting her head, Zarah beamed up at the other and then spoke in a child-like voice. "Can I be the first one to read it? Please, please, please?" Pouting slightly, Zarah couldn't hold a straight face before somewhat bursting out with laughter once more. |

up with the birds ,
nothing made him happier than to see zarah, as long as he had zarah he was happy. you could take away all the paper, ink, and books in the world and he'd be okay with it as long as he had his best friend. they had stuck close together since zarah's parents divorce and his parents abandoning him. they made the best of both their tough situations. there were nights where they stayed up really late together and just talked. they ended up falling asleep on each other and having a sleepover. their grandfather's always assumed they were dating and had a spark between them. dex's grandfather didn't care at all about having the beautiful blonde girl sleeping over from time to time. his grandfather understood the bond between them was one that would never be broken. his grandfather could see the distress whenever zarah left, he guessed he had feelings towards her long ago. prior to him finding out about his feelings, his grandfather always told him that she would be the one for him.
as zarah landed on the opposite side of the couch and spoke he listened intently, taking off his reading glasses and setting them on the nearby table. he laughed alongside zarah and grasped his story closer to him. he watched as she twirled a piece of blonde curl within her fingers. dex smiled, he loved doing that to her hair and just playing with it. she had such beautiful long hair and he knew a lot of girls were jealous of it. as he complimented her a small form of blush went across her face. dex flipped and adjusted his hair, messing it up slightly at the top. zarah uncrossed her legs and moved closer to dex, making his stomach go wild with butterflies. she rested her head on his shoulder, he wrapped his free arm around her gently hugging her close. from behind it would seem like they were a couple but they obviously weren't. he rubbed he arm and snuggled her for a second before letting his arm fall to couch beside her. "zarah you know i always tell you my stories first, you've always been my number one fan." he smiled down at her, wishing more than anything he could just hold her by this fire all night. she pouted lightly and then burst out laughing. dex laughed with her, he couldn't stop laughing and smiling around her. "my grandfather sent me an owl the other day, i brought it along because he wanted us to read it together." dex pulled it out from his sweater's pocket, it hadn't been opened yet.

The young woman remembered back to the times the pair had fallen asleep together as children and she wished she could do that again. Well, they had fallen asleep countless times on one of the Common Room sofas and found that some kind Ravenclaw had placed a blanket over them during the night, but something that Zarah missed was crawling into Dexter's bed. At times when the sisters had actually planned the sleep over, Zarah would often crawl out from her own sleeping arangement on the floor and cuddle up to Dex. She would try her best not to wake him, and to the best of her knowledge he didn't know that she had ever done that. However at Hogwarts, she couldn't do that.
"That's because I don't let anyone else have a chance of being your number one fan. I am, and always will be." Sitting up, Zarah kissed Dexter's cheek and laughed a little before looking down towards the letter that he had produced from his pocket. Why had his grandfather wanted the pair of them to read it together? It wasn't that it was an unusual request. Both of their grandfather's usually sent things that the pair would open together - regardless if it was private or not. Zarah would share anything and everything with Dexter. Well, except for two things. The fact that she never had a boyfriend because of him, and her cuddling up to him during the night back in France.
"What did he say? Open it, open it!" The young woman began bouncing up and down before wrapping her arms around Dexter's neck and grinning. "Or can I open it? You know how I like opening things!" |

dex felt all warm and fuzzy on the inside, cuddling by the fire with zarah. he wished that she knew how much he actually liked her. the guys would always tease him about 'making a move' but these sort of things took time. he thought about it, he waited more than ten years for the right moment to express his feelings for zarah, no moment had been just right for him yet. dex didn't want to risk it and put it all on the line either. he was shocked she hadn't realized how affectionate he was towards her. it was quite obvious how much he flirted with her, yet he was glad she was in the dark about it. dex missed their summer nights together, spending nearly everyone at dex's grandfather's having sleepovers under the stars. the harrison sisters were like his family he couldn't imagine growing up without them. he had no siblings and they were all the company they needed and more.
zarah's kiss on his cheek made him blush a bright red, he tried to hide it but there was no use. "i'm your number one fan too, i can't even count how many recitals i've been to over the years. each one more dazzling then the next." zarah had a gift for dance, she soared across the dance floor like no other. he loved going and watching her perform, all her recitals he made sure to take pictures. on his nightstand had a photo of the two laughing and smiling and him handing her a dozen roses after a performance. wizarding photo's were much better than muggle photo's, moving instead of standing still, capturing a moment perfectly. dex laughed at zarah's excitement, he felt her hands wr "course you can open it zee, i'll read it though. you know our grandfather's always send things in pairs." he had just gotten the owl and he couldn't wait to see what was so important they wrote a joint letter to the both of them. he snuggled her closer to him and rested his head on hers, "i heard a jingling in the package, i'm not quite sure what it was though.." he trailed off, his best guess was jewelry.

However the young woman figured that that was how he acted around the girls he had crushes on, and only did it for her so she wouldn't get jealous. Zarah wasn't the jealous type, however whenever she would hear Dex talk about another girl, she would stare at the floor and wait for him to finish before changing the subject to something different. It always confused her how girls put the male in the friendzone. If only he could see Zarah as more than a friend for just a moment, she would be able to show him that she could make him happy.
"You're the only one who's been to most of my recitals. And you're the only one I truly want there, Dex-Dex." Wrapping her arms around his neck once more, Zarah smiled and rested her head against his shoulder before looking down at the envelope. She enjoyed opening things, and then listening to Dexter read them out. The way his voice formed every word perfectly was almost soothing enough to send the young woman to sleep. Removing her arms from around his neck, Zarah opened up the envelope carefully and removed the letter. She shook the envelope slightly and heard the jingling. "You look! It might be something scary!" Raising her hands like a ghoul, Zarah produced a scary noise and laughed.
Un-folding the letter, Zarah then passed it towards Dexter and shifted herself so her head was on his lap and her legs were hanging off the arm-rests of the sofa. Closing her eyes, the young woman ran a hand through her hair and began to curl one of her blonde locks, a smile ever present on her face to hear Dexter speak. |

dex couldn't help but wonder if zee felt the same, she did show acts of affection which made him think twice. he always tried to make subtle hints to zarah to see if she'd notice. unfortunately, these subtle hints did go unnoticed. he also tried the jealously act on her, just to test her and see what would happen. he knew it was awful to test her but this also didn't work. she just wasn't the jealous type. dex also made up most of these girls and they actually didn't exist. he was glad she didn't look into who these girls actually were if she did, she would find there was no one in hogwarts with the name. she would just quietly listen and look to the floor when he spoke of these made up girls. it seemed like she took no interest in his love life or love at all. zarah never really had a boyfriend, he always saw her hanging around guys and them flirting with her (which made him enraged). she flirted back, he figured that was just her playful personality though.
"aw, i feel special then." dex squeezed her tight for a second before letting go. he loved zarah, he really did enjoy seeing her have fun on stage. the best part was seeing her face light up when he handed her a bouquet of flowers. zarah put her hands around his neck and this was normal for them to snuggle by the fire. he was excited to read the letter but was quite concerned of what their grandfather's found so important to send a joint letter. as the letter ripped open he was scared of the contents, he knew that zarah probably felt the same way. as she raised her hands up like a ghoul he laughed lightly. zee always had a way to make him laugh, "zee you're as scary as a baby mouse." he smiled before ruffling her hair, he took the envelope from her and the letter.
as she re-positioned herself so her head was on his lap he smiled before glancing at the letter. before this he took his wand from his sweater pocket and flicked it, a blanket floated from across the room and onto zarah's tiny frame. "there, now that we're all cozy i guess i should read it.." he trailed off before clearing his voice, "dearest dexie-rexie and zar-bear." he read before stopping, it was obviously his grandfather writing, he loved giving the two nicknames. dex rolled his eyes and continued, "you must be wondering why we wrote one letter instead of two, the truth is we have something important to give you two. enclosed inside this letter is two rings." dex stopped and shook out two rings and handed them to zarah to look at as he read. "they were handed down throughout the generations. i had one and zarah's grandfather also had one. we decided it was time to pass them down to you two. they're not ordinary rings though, the stones within will swirl a red-orange colour when you two are ever together." dex looked over and the stones changed from the normal grey-hue to a red-orange. "they symbol everlasting friendship and both me and zarah's grandfather have had them since we were lads, we thought it was the right time for you two to now have them so whenever you're apart you'll never be too far from each other. now then, this letter is getting quite long, we send your love and we cannot wait to hear from the two of you. much love, stay safe." dex finished the end of the letter and put it down to the side, "w-o-w." dex said glancing over at the two rings, "as if we never noticed those on their fingers." dex said in amazement.

Herself, and Dexter. She loved watching his face as she moved across the stage effortlessly, and the only reason her smile never faded was because her eyes were almost always locked on his face. He provided her with something that made it seem like they were the only two in the entire building. The only two in the entire world. To be perfectly honest, Zarah would have loved it if Dexter was the only one to ever come to her recitals. Sure, she loved her sister and loved her family, but the boy meant something more to her that they wouldn't be able to provide. He gave her a sense of hope, escape, freedom, amazement, and most of all; love. Zarah knew she loved Dexter, she just didn't know how to tell him.
Curling up against Dexter's leg, Zarah moved part of the blanket so it was over his legs and then looked down at the rings. She watched them change colour and her eyes opened wide as she listened to the letter. "Dex-Dex... I'm sorry, but you can never be too far away from me ever again. These rings are too pretty to go back to their dull grey-hue colour" Looking up at him, Zarah laughed slightly. "Oh, and because I want to spend time with you." Beaming up at him, Zarah handed him one of the rings and slipped the other one on her ring finger on her right hand. Smiling down at it, Zarah looked back up towards Dexter.
Sitting up, Zarah closed the space between the two once more and wrapped her arms around Dexter's torso as she moved his arm to swing around her shoulders. Resting her head against his chest, the young woman closed her eyes and sighed slightly. "I wonder why, after all this time, they only decided to give them to us now." |

up with the birds ,
zarah's recitals and practices were breathtaking, he couldn't help but feel so amazed watching them. her dance team always thought they were dating and he was her boyfriend because he would walk her there and back from practice, many times staying and waiting until they were finished. during her recitals, he made sure to get a front row seat for a good view. he couldn't help feel a spark when she danced, like when they made eye contact it was a jolt of electricity through his veins. dex loved the way zarah made him feel it was the most special feeling anyone has ever given him. he wished she felt the same way, there was no use though, who would ever love a guy like him? he was nerdy and spent most of his time writing sappy love stories. dex was the one always stuck in the friendzone, he was stuck there with zarah right now and he secretly wished he really was her boyfriend.
dex watched as she played with the rings in her hand, he watched them glow a red-orange again. it wasn't bright, the stones swirled different colours which was really pretty. it was prettier than the lackluster grey they were before. "i promise to always be by your side then zee, that's not going to be a difficult promise to keep." dex said softly, moving a stray curl away from her delicate face. he laughed after zarah, he couldn't help it her laugh was contagious. "it is true though, they are prettier now." he said taking the rings from her, he slipped his on his right hand as well. he examined it for a second, he wondered what kind of magic was placed on the rings. dex had never seen it before that was for sure. he was curious to see if dex and zarah would pass them down through their generations too. he hoped to grow old with zarah and be friends forever.
zarah closed the gap between them and wrapped her arms around him, resting her head on his chest. he let his arm fall on her shoulders, he leaned down and kissed her hair. he loved being close with her, no wonder people thought they were dating. they were always so close when they hung out. "maybe they were waiting for the right moment." dex answered softly, "i mean this is the perfect moment to give them to us.. if we were kids we would've lost them by now." he laughed softly, he felt oddly closer to zarah than ever before. dex's heart felt like it would explode in his chest, he knew his grandfather was prompting him from afar to make his move. he could also hear zarah's grandfather in the back of his head prompting him too. he sighed, dex wasn't ready yet to tell zarah. "i'm glad we decided to stay in tonight." dex looked around and the common room was dimly lit by a few candles and the fireplace, it was the perfect romantic setting.

The siblings would often leave their home during the early hours of the day, only to stand by the gate at Dexter's grandfather's house and wait for the young boy to come outside. Often; Emily would run home to help their mother and grandfather, thus leaving Zarah and Dexter alone to play. It was through this that the two grew closer in friendship. Emily was still close to Dexter, just not as close as Zarah was. And that's just the way Zarah liked it. She didn't want to share her Dex-Dex with anyone.
Snuggling closer to the young male as she felt him kiss the top of her head, Zarah smiled and sucked in a deep breath. "Nothing could be better than this, Mr. Dex-Dex. I don't care what anyone else says, I'd rather spend my night like this, with you." Lifting her head slightly, the young woman placed a small kiss on her friend's cheek and nuzzled back into his chest. A light blush grew on her cheeks as she squeezed her eyes shut and giggled a little. She wasn't the flirtatious type - she left that all up to her sister - but she tried her best to drop little, subtle hints here and there to let on that she liked Dexter. Well, liked is an understatement. By this point in time, Zarah would have gone as far as to say that she had fallen for Dexter. She had butterflies whenever he was around; and, well, he was her definition of love.
"I don't know what I'd do without you, Dexter. I honestly don't." Zarah longed to say those three little words to the young male, however she simply couldn't bring herself to. She didn't want to ruin what a great, close, friendship they shared. As she wasn't sure if he felt the same way about her. A small sighed escaped the young woman's lips as she opened her eyes and stared towards the fire. |

up with the birds ,
whenever dex was with zarah they created new lasting memories and it made him somewhat nostalgic. they often reminisced about their past, remembering all the good times and just laughing over silly stuff they did together. emily often left early to help out back home but dex was selfish and kept zarah all to himself. dex often felt selfish always calling on her and always keeping her busy so she wouldn't want to go home. he loved playing with her as a kid, he loved everything about zarah. everything as a kid was plain and simple, he didn't realize as a kid that fuzzy feeling in his stomach was butterflies. he just thought every guy felt that way when they were around zarah, her smile lit up a room and whenever she danced it was like the whole world stopped just to watch her. everything was filled with magic and butterflies, he would never forget all those distant memories. not to mention the ones that were to be made in the future.
dex wouldn't trade a million galleons for what they were doing now, "trust me, i feel the same way." dexter muttered softly, he rested his cheek on the top of her head. he felt a small peck on his cheek, his chin dropped slightly and he started to blush. dex loved kisses on the cheek from zarah, they made him blush instantly and made his heart flutter. gestures like this made him think she did feel the same way he did. then moments when they were in a huge group, just kidding around he thought differently. there were these close moments like these that made his heart grow fonder and fonder for her. he was happy to have such a close comfortable friendship with her. he often wondered if they did have a relationship, would it be the same way? dex already knew the answer, it probably would be much better than this.
upon hearing those words dex's smile brightened, "i don't know what i would do without you either." he returned the compliment. he couldn't imagine his life without zarah, if he did it'd be an awful reality to wake up too. "i couldn't imagine my life without you in it." he voiced his thoughts freely around her, which made their friendship so great. dex could show his soft side freely.

She had wanted to do that ever since the two were little. Every waking moment, the young woman would think about her best friend and how her butterflies would always grow in numbers whenever they would share a close moment such as this. When they were younger, Zarah would often sneak out of her home to meet Dexter down by the lake where they would sit and talk. The two of them had found a hollowed out tree just big enough to hide both of their bodies and a few extra things inside. They had called it their special place and hadn't told a soul about it. Yet ever since they had come to Hogwarts, the pair found an abandoned broom closet at the top of a spiral staircase and had transformed it into their own special place away from home.
Looking up towards the male, Zarah wondered if Dexter had told anyone about their special place and soon smiled at the realisation that he would have never done such a thing. "I don't want to imagine my life without you in it." Resting her head against his chest once more, Zarah closed her eyes and laughed a little at the thought of most students who saw the pair thought they were dating. If they were, people would be seeing very little of either of the two, as Zarah would have constantly had him all to herself. All she wanted in the world was to tell Dexter how she felt. Sighing, the young woman sat up and looked towards the fire. "Dex-Dex, I need your help with something."
Standing up, Zarah tossed the blanket to the side and pushed the small table away to make a small, free area. Stretching her hand out to Dexter, the young woman smiled and brought her foot up to rest it's arch against the other's ankle. "May I have this dance, good sir?" Placing her other hand behind her back, Zarah brought her foot back down before bowing towards Dexter and giggling. "I need to learn a dance move that I have to perform with a partner... But he's in Gryffindor, so I can't really..." Standing back up, Zarah smiled and rolled her eyes. "Fine, I just want to dance with Mr. Dexter. Is that such a crime?" |

up with the birds ,
dex always wanted to know what it was like to kiss zarah, he had dreamed it about a million times. whenever he woke from those dreams his heart was racing and butterflies fluttered in his stomach. it made it hard to fall back asleep after those kinds of dreams, he had troubles trying not to cross the line of just being friends too. dex knew it was best if he just kept their friendship and not risk losing zarah. he had seen her talking to other guys and hugging them, dex knew it was all just friendly chatter. in the back of his mind he couldn't help but believe he was destined to be with her. he was the one who would steal her heart away from all those other guys. if zarah ever found a boyfriend dex would of course back off and be friendly to the male. in his mind though, he would be mentally stabbing him repeatedly. dex was very protective over zarah and the thought of someone else having the power to hurt her made him ache inside. as he watched the rings glow together he smiled to himself and looked down at zarah, brushing her curls lightly he leaned down and kissed her hair once more.
"you make everyday the best day of my life." he grinned, trying to hide the blush that was forming on his cheeks. dex felt her move her head against his chest and she closed her eyes. he wanted so badly to pause this moment and live in it forever. the romantic setting and the fact that no one was around proved that this would've been the perfect moment to tell her how he truly felt. his head said no but his heart screamed yes. he usually followed his head, it was useless trying to calm down his beating heart right now. he couldn't ignore his feelings for much longer, the friendship would one day not be enough for dex, he would want more and more from zarah. he was greedy over her sometime's never wanting to let her walk to a class alone. "anything for you dear." he smiled and watched as she flung the blanket away from the two of them.
she pushed aside the small table to make room, he gave her a puzzled look. as she bowed and asked for a dance, dex looked completely stunned at her. they only danced at the small balls they had in the great hall. it wasn't much but dex asked zarah everytime to be his date, as friends of course. dex shook his head as zarah giggled, "you know i can't dance zarah." dex had two left feet and only danced in small circles slowly with her at the balls. he was awful at dancing, he was better at reading or writing of course. as he heard about this 'mystery' gryffindor dancing partner he scowled, he already knew this guy was fake but he hated him already. dex didn't want any girl twirling zarah around like a princess but him. this prompted him to jump on his feet and he placed a hand on the small of her back and the other locked in hers. he swung her into a dip, "i'd love to dance zarah." he laughed softly, he had a few moves up his sleeve after all. dex lifted her slowly back up so she was standing and let go of her hand to flick his wand to a nearby record player, it sprung to life at the flick of his wrist. "dancing with music is always better but you'll have to teach me." he said taking back her hand and smiling innocently, he wasn't a good dancer at all. always stepping on her toes when just doing a simple slow dance.
